Mission Incident, Santa Paula, CA
Ventura County FD and adjoining FDs
On November 20, 2014, Ventura County FD and Santa Paula FD engines responded to an explosion with traumatic injuries at a water treatment facility in the City of Santa Paula. After several minutes the incident was increased to a full hazardous materials response adding units from Ventura City FD, Oxnard FD and Point Mugu Federal FD. As the incident grew with the light of day, a mutual aid request for a Type 1 Haz Mat team added a HMTF from the LA County FD.
In the end, one fire engine was lost, seven FD personnel were exposed and injured by the chemicals (including one mechanic who worked on the engine after it had been “deconned”), two employees of the treatment facility were injured and more than 15-20 people were transported to local area hospitals, including a passing motorcyclist who happened to drive through the chemical cloud on the nearby highway.
Come hear what occurred during this confusing incident, which is still under investigation by the Ventura County District Attorney’s office, from members of the Ventura County FD HMTF and Safety Officer on scene.
