SAFER Message
Dear SAFER friends and family,
Hoping this message finds everyone healthy and well. Due to the restrictions of COVID 19, the SAFER monthly meeting for February is canceled .The SAFER Board is looking into options for a socially distant and/or online process for these meetings in the future. Until that time please remain safe and healthy.
For the vendors and fire service leaders, CalOSHA is continuing to be very active and is refining and adjusting several key areas that will impact us:
AB 685 COVID 19 Emergency Order
(make sure your Aerolisized Transmittal Disease Program is up-to-date)
Access and information availability to employees regarding your Injury and Illness Prevention ProgramSection 3203(a)
Protection of Workers from Wildfire Smoke, new Section 5141.1
Respirator Fit Test / Section 5144 (Federal level at this point)
Modifying Requirements to Produce Citations on Appeal and Modifying Discovery Rules, Sections 347, 359.1, 361.3, 372.2 and 373, and
AB 2146- Firefighter PPE is in development and is essentially the State adopting NFPA Standards: 1971, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1851, 1852 and 1854. This has been in development for many years and is finally in the adoption process. AB 2146 is a wide reaching standard and my impact your budgets, staff positions (to manage the requirements) and administrative requirements (i.e. Department specific written programs)
Lastly, watch your members who have tested positive for COVID 19; as research continues we are noticing that the "long-hauler" issues are real and typically challenge the members with latent health concerns in the following areas:
Respiratory
Cardiopulmonary
Neurological
Psychological
The return to work process can be lengthy for some and the long term health effects are not completely known. Access to specialists in the above areas is critical as is claim documentation. I hope to provide more information on the "Long-hauler" syndrome in coming weeks.
Be safe,

SAFER Meeting - December 2020 Cancelled
Happy Holidays SAFER friends and family,
It is my sincerest hope that this message is finding everyone in good health; this year has provided unimaginable challenges for everyone. I am resolute in my belief that we will survive this pandemic and related crisis’ but not without a little hardening of our soul.
For several years Santa Fe Springs Fire Department has hosted the December SAFER meeting; and each time it was like a holiday homecoming! I was really looking forward to this year’s gathering and extremely disappointed that it is being cancelled due to the ongoing restrictions of COVID 19.
As I write this notice the COVID 19 Vaccine has arrived in southern California, perhaps the gift we have all been hoping for, a Christmas miracle perhaps!
I would like to thank Santa Fe Springs for their continuing support or SAFER and the Holiday Greetings they generously share, if there were ever a time for their seasonal cheer it is now.
I would also like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays and a great New Year!!
Please be safe, look out for each other and remember all the business out there who could really use your support!!

SAFER Meeting - October 2020
Dear SAFER Friends and Family,
As has been the ongoing theme due to COVID 19, I am regretfully notifying you that the September SAFER meeting which was scheduled to be hosted by Ventura City Fire Department has been canceled. We would like to thank them for their continued support and willingness to host. Unfortunately the hard fact is we should consider all in-person meetings canceled until further notice, we are looking into other options to host with COVID 19 protections in place . Executive SAFER Staff is trying to post relevant information on our webpage, please check in on us when you can. If you have information that you believe is in alignment with SAFER values and would like it to be posted, contact me via e-mail.
This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. LIke so many others Breast Cancer and Cancer in general has invaded our families, it resides in our neighborhoods and is continuously seeking a new and innocent victim. It is a sobering experience causing extreme anxiety and questions when you are told "you have cancer". Thankfully, due to science, medical advancements, prevention and benevolent charities many are surviving this insidious disease. The journey is trying in countless ways. My mother survived breast cancer, but it was not without deep personal losses; at that time the treatment was nearly as difficult to tolerate as the horrific disease. The first time I saw her bald due to Chemo and radiation reality hit and it finally showed on the outside the battle that was raging on the inside.
COVID 19 has ruled life, it has prevented critical care to cancer patients, it has put many at an increased risk, it has delayed needed advancements in ongoing research and has been a distraction to so many other greater causes. Donate, share, call a friend and look out for each other; someone very near you would appreciate your time during their time of need.
September and October are also the time we reflect on our fallen brothers and sisters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, COVID 19 restrictions should not prevent these brave men and women from being recognized. I will be arranging an executive board meeting to address next years positions, innovation and meeting opportunities.

SAFER Meeting - September 2020
Dear SAFER friends and family,
Regretfully, the September SAFER Monthly meeting is being cancelled due to competing demands placed upon us and the Fire Service in general. COVID 19 remains persistent and restrictions remain firmly in place throughout the region; and, many others are committed to Administrative Overhead assignments and Strike Team deployments battling the massive and devastating wildland fires locally and throughout California and Oregon.
I did want to share a few personal comments; these are unprecedented times, a conglomerate of ongoing natural and man-made emergencies, politically dividing events, the pandemic crisis, potentially polarizing social standings and the 9/11 anniversary. Just one these issues causes a level of stress and pressure in your normal life. If you are in a leadership role these are trying times; but your duty is to lead and keep your people safe. We all look for and admire good examples of those that handle these challenges with the right finesse and appropriateness. This is suicide awareness and prevention month. Sadly, current affairs are exemplifying the need to heighten your awareness of those under your command for stress and behavioral needs. Be the help someone needs, listen, support and reach out!
Lastly and most personally, the Creek Fire struck very close to home. The community of Shaver Lake and the western Sierra back country was a place where I had a home and would vacation, this was where I would reset. I was spared any significant loss while others lost everything. I am deeply empathic of the impact and sense of loss a wildfire has on a community. If you are currently deployed or just got off the line, never ever under estimate the value you bring to a community in need. My deepest appreciation and gratitude to all of you who continue to save lives, protect property and defend our ravaged environment!
